i want to start some scrapbooks since i have a 1 year old now and am start my family. plus i slao recently lost my father and i want to put together a scrapbook of his life to show my children when they grow up since they’ll never really remember or know their grandfather. i know target, wal-mart have scrapbooking materials. but since this is going to be a huge project for me i want to know what store to go to for the best selection of supplies. any suggestions ? (i live in fort collins, CO)
I live in South Carolina and we have very few scrapbooking stores, so we have to use the Walmart, Michaels, AC Moore, but each store here locally carries a different selection – it depends on the buyer, I guess, and the way the merchandise sells. I have discovered a lot of places on-line like ClubScrap.com, Personal Shopper and Storytellers for Kits of paper, fibers, embellishments & rubber stamps, etc, and then there is also Joann’s, Hobby Lobby, etc.
Here’s a link to my to my web site where I list my Favorite scrapbooking Sites that are on-line, all of which I have used for years.

There are so many products out there, just try to concentrate on getting the photos and possibly some photo mattes to match the photos and tie them to the background paper colors. I read recently that in 2008, 27,000 new scrapbook products were released and that just boggles my mind. I have scraping for years and don’t know what I’d do if I was just getting into the products.
I would check out the phone book for any local stores where you can get some good hands-on assistance for starters and maybe check out some of the finished layouts. And, many of the kit products out there have some nice coordinated page layouts that they often show on the outside of the packages.
Club Scrap at
http://www.clubscrap.com/pgdrv2.cfm?c=alsb/alsb_main
has Assembly Line Scrapbook Layouts (ALSB) that they supply with each monthly kit to help you create artistic and balanced coordinated layouts using their kit supplies, and if you purchase the kit- the assembly line instructions come free.
So very sorry to hear about your father. I did a scrapbook about mine and it was very helpful to me emotionally and spiritually and I think you have a great idea there. Lynne

My target and walmart have very little in the way of scrapbooking. You are better off at
JoAnn fabrics- lots of sales there and you can use the coupon
Hobby Lobby – large selection, and good prices
Craft 2000- great prices
Archiver’s- they have the latest products – don’t know if they are in CO
most scrapbooking specialty stores have die cuts and tools you can use at their store. If you buy the paper there, you can stay in the store and scrapbook using their tools.

How wise you are at an early age to realize the importance of "recording your family history." For that truly is what scrapbooking is all about.
Have you heard of Creative Memories? You can go to the website here: http://www.mycmsite.com/marycluley
Here you can find the only scrapbook album that has a lifetime guarantee. It truly is the best and that is what we want when we take the time to record our history. We want our children’s children to read it! How wonderful that will be for them!
When you go to a local store, you will find "post bound" albums…with the holes and screws holding the album together. You will see that each page is held to the albums by about 1/8th inch of plastic. It is only a matter of time before these pages rip. I have seen it many many times. In addition, these types of albums do not lie FLAT, which is very important as the photos will start coming off the page, etc.
At the website above, go to "project center" for tons and tons of ideas. I recommend "traditional" then "heritage" and you will get some beautiful ideas for your dad’s album. Then, go to "traditional" then "baby" albums…for such great ideas. There are tons of layout ideas here!
Another thing to think about since these are your first scrapbook projects….is to keep it simple. Remember, it’s not really about all the stickers and papers….it’s about your family photos and your journalling. I recommend in your child’s album to journal "to" your child…you don’t say if it is a boy or girl, but for example, instead of "Easter, 2006," you would write, "John, look how handsome you look in your Easter suit, 2006." It is about endearing love. When you are gone, your child will know how much you loved him.
At the website, under "shop products," in addition to the albums, there are complete "sets" called Power Pallettes….look at the "Discover" one if your child is a boy and the "Delight" one if your child is a girl. These are complete sets which beautifully match….so it takes the "thinking" out of it and your albums will be so beautiful….just add photos!
If I can be of any more help, I would be honored to. Another website I frequent is http://www.dennydavis.net and I don’t know who this gentleman is but the website is fabulous. I use it often in my album making. Happy New Year!
